A World Where Memory Doesn’t Fade

A World Where Memory Doesn’t Fade

“How do you coach your kids to live in a world where memory does not fade?”
— Hasan Minhaj

I don’t remember when he said this, but it stuck with me. It made me think about how childhood today is vastly different from what we experienced growing up.

Back then, our mistakes faded with time. If we pulled a dumb prank or made a fool of ourselves, it lived on only in the memories of those who were there. Years later, those stories turned into harmless, nostalgic laughs among friends—”Remember that time when…?” But now, a single moment—caught on video, shared online—can follow kids for years, sometimes for life.

I hear it all the time from people my age:
“Thank goodness there weren’t videos of what we did.”

And I get it. We had our fair share of reckless stunts, but we never had to navigate a world where every misstep was documented and replayed.

Some adults say today’s youth need to be stronger, more resilient. But let’s be honest—we never had to deal with this. We never had to grow up in a world where nothing is ever truly forgotten.

So, how do we prepare them? How do we help them navigate a life where their past is always just a click away? They need resilience. They need strength. They need to know their worth beyond the fleeting judgments of the internet.

I don’t have kids, so I can only hope parents are finding ways to equip them for this reality. For those of you raising the next generation—how are you preparing them for a world where memory doesn’t fade?
